Talk: The Vaucluse House Park Trust Collection 1915-1970
Vaucluse House came into public ownership in 1910, when its surrounding estate was resumed by government for use as a public recreation ground. It was gazetted as Vaucluse Park in 1911 with a board of trustees appointed to administer the property. By 1915 those trustees had begun to take an interest in the 'old house' that came with the estate, and its association with William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872), explorer, author, barrister, landowner & statesman. They began collecting furniture and other items provenanced to the Vaucluse House and the Wentworths. They also collected historical relics associated with other prominent colonial personalities.
This lecture will explore the legacy of those early Vaucluse Park trustees as it survives today in the collection at Vaucluse House.
