Proposed Itinerary
Friday 18 March - Optional (Members and the board have the opportunity to come together for a planning meeting which will commence at 11.00 am. This meeting will conclude at 3.30pm).
From 4pm Drinks and canapes at Rothwell Lodge, 24 Ferry Rd, Glebe, home of Robert Hannan and Peter Crawshaw. Extra details of the program will be provided - a good opportunity to meet participants. Furniture and pictures will be on display, including some new items.
Saturday 19 March
9.00 am Departing by bus from Central Station - travel to Coledale to visit a colonial furniture collection belonging to Society members.
Lunch at the historic Coal Loader at Waverton then onto St Ives to see a wonderful collection of early maps of the southern hemisphere, depicting parts of Terra Australis, early Australian marine artefacts, documents and artefacts from the early European settlement, together with contemporary Aboriginal items. This is an extensive collection and will take some time to peruse. It will be a first viewing for just about everyone and is by courtesy of a member. Return to Central Station by 5.00pm.
Sunday 20 March
Meeting at the Rocks under the Harbour Bridge at 9.00am we start the day viewing two recntly restored early colonial houses with early fabric maintained & refitted for modern day living.
Bus to the Australian Club in Macquarie St founded in 1838 to see their extensive art collection and furniture, hear their Stuart & Son piano and enjoy lunch.
After lunch we will visit a Society member’s important early ceramics, art and furniture collection in Waverton followed by an early 6pm dinner at Sails restaurant in Lavender Bay/McMahons Point. The Kevin Fahy Lecture will be delivered byBob Fredman, a tour participant. Sails restaurant has a fine reputation and has iconic harbour views.
Monday 21 March
Depart Central Station at 8.30am for Camden Park, a most important Georgian house and property still held by descendants of John and Elizabeth Macarthur. Architecture, furniture and an important historical garden is a fabulous setting for morning tea and lunch before setting off for Cox’s Cottage at Mulgoa. This timber house was rescued by member James Broadbent and has a real feel of a c1820 classic bungalow with low slung verandah. Refreshments will be served. We will return to Central at 5.00pm.
Tuesday 22 March
Departing Central Station at 9.00am to visit Old Government House at Parramatta and a new exhibition called Making Good: Convict Artists in Exile led by the exhibition’s curator. Then to the Power House museum in Harris St Ultimo to a new exhibition Eucalyptus-dom. This exhibition celebrates the changing relationship and use of the gum tree through 400 objects. A second exhibition Clay Dynasty also features 400 objects covering post world war two Australian ceramics.
After lunch we travel to a member’s home in Petersham to view a fine collection including furniture by Lenehan. The tour concludes at another member’s home in nearby Stanmore where again there are many exceptional furniture items, pictures and Australiana.
There will be a catered early dinner in the garden to conclude our four-day tour.
